The new museum of architecture and design is situated on a unique site, bordered by Helsinki's South Harbor to the east, the city of Helsinki to the west, and the forested landscape of Tähtitorninvuori Park to the south. Surrounded by forest, urban, and harbor landscapes, the site is also dotted with various important tourist attractions, such as Helsingin Tuomiokirkko, Uspenskin Katedraali, and Johanneksenkirkko
Given this setting, the connection to the surrounding landmarks and the method of attracting visitors is particularly important. Firstly, based on the orientation of the forest, city, and harbor landscapes, the building opens up towards the forest, city, and harbor, forming a public square. This approach not only introduces the three landscapes simultaneously but also integrates the site more deeply with the city of Helsinki. Additionally, the roof is designed as a viewing platform facing these three directions, allowing visitors to enjoy views of the forest, city, and sea while also gazing at important landmarks in the city.
The architectural massing consists of two parts: a platform and a canopy. The platform houses a museum, restaurant, and conference area. The canopy, shaped like undulating mountains, opens up and partially shields the views of the forest, city, and harbor, controlling the sightlines of visitors. The three volumes represent exhibition halls, a restaurant, and a multifunctional auditorium. Some exhibition hallsare covered by a double-layer facade, with the outer layer made of perforated metal panels matching the color of the facade, allowing visitors inside to overlook the city, forest, and harbor.
The building's facade primarily uses wood, responding to the significant role wood has played in Finnish architectural history and the deep impact of nature on the country. The white canopy over the main structure resembles snow-covered forests, constantly
reminding people of the beauty of this snowy city.
